WHITE WINE OF THE MONTH

2010 Tilia Torrontes
Salta, Argentina
Only $10.99

Tilia. Literally this refers to the Linden trees that paint the Argentine landscape.Metaphorically, for the winery–owned by the Family Catena and made at their famed Bodegas Esmeralda–this tree has come to symbolize the respect for earth their workers and growers have when using sustainable methods in their viniculture, the protection the leaves give to the hard workers when the blazing sun seems all too unforgiving and the growth and wisdom that comes with every passing year.

The Torrontes is exactly as it should be: crisp, poised and perfumed with no better time to express itself than the present–in the hot, august heat. A squeeze of tangerine and whiff of exotic flowers is exactly what you need to try and remedy that late afternoon hour that seems to not want to let up on the mercury dial. Due to its fruity exotic demure, it is an excellent choice for any Asian or Mexican cuisine you might plan to partake.

RED WINE OF THE MONTH

2010 Tilia Malbec-Syrah
Mendoza, Argentina
Only $10.99

Everybody loves a Malbec. This we know for certain just by surveying the Argentine shelves that lay bare each Monday when the weekend passes. But while we don’t dare interrupt the love affair by suggesting an entirely different grape or region… we are tempted to see what you think of the fun loving varietal when we throw a little Syrah in the mix.

Still clinging tight to its predictable notes of blackberry, blueberry, tomato leaf and violets, a couple more characters come to the stage. There is a richness in body that isn’t always common in Malbec–certainly when they see no considerable oak. A hint of meat and wild raspberries will excite the palate and comfortably situate itself to just about any meal that involves meat, portabellas or hard salty cheese.
